Elvis Presley's Bible and Noel Gallagher's Handwritten Oasis Lyrics to Auction

Sotheby's

Elvis Presley's Bible

Handwritten lyrics by David Bowie and Noel Gallagher join a Bible given to Elvis Presley by a fan at Sotheby's' inaugural Rock & Pop sale with bidding running until April 23.

The World Publishing Company travel bible features a portrait of Elvis and his mother on the cover, with “In Memory | Mother” embossed in gilt, signed "Elvis Presley" in blue ballpoint on verso. It comes in a black leather case with a metal cross charm, and was presented to the singer by a fan who inscribed it to him “This book will keep you from sin and only sin will keep you from this book. With love, Joy Woodson.” The bible ended up at Graceland and was given to the current owner by Elvis’ aunt, Delta Presley. It has an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Going under the hammer alongside David Bowie’s handwritten lyrics for The Jean Genie (estimate: $125,000–$150,000) is Noel Gallagher's Oasis manuscript lyric sheet for Don’t Look Back in Anger, ca. 1995 (estimate: $30,000-$40,000).

Handwritten in blue ballpoint pen on ruled paper with three-hole punch, it includes various chord notations including on the left side of the page and was probably written out for another band member.

Gallagher has previously said that he wrote it his hotel room on a rainy Paris night after a gig before the band had become famous.

The sale will also feature Elvis Presley’s cherry-red Hagstrom guitar from his 1968 Comeback Special, Gallagher’s signed Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic guitar from Oasis’s (What's the Story) Morning Glory? sessions, and Bruce Springsteen’s acoustic guitar used to write Born to Run.
